An old Cherokee told his grandson,
“My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth.”
The boy thought about it, and asked, “Grandfather, which wolf wins?”
The old man quietly replied,
“The one you feed.”
It is a powerful story, and a powerful lesson. Every moment of every day, you are feeding a wolf. All thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and attitudes feed one wolf or the other: Good or Evil. Or as I like to see it, Love or Fear. You can’t feed both wolves simultaneously. When you are feeding the Love wolf, you are not feeding the Fear wolf. When you are feeding the Fear wolf, you are not feeding the Love wolf.
What does the Fear wolf do for you? It keeps you in what I call your uncomfortable comfort zone. It builds walls so high to keep you safe, but it keeps everything else out in the meantime. The Fear wolf keeps you alive by keeping everything the same. But if everything stays the same, then you never get what you truly want: contentment, connection, fulfilment. And the Fear wolf never makes the world a better place.
What does the Love wolf do for you? The Love wolf scares the crap out of your Fear wolf. It encourages you to break down your own walls to reach out to others and to let others in. It makes you vulnerable as you step outside your comfort zone to create connection, find contentment, and discover fulfilment. The Love wolf makes the world a better place.
In this very moment, and in each moment, you are feeding a wolf. Which wolf are you feeding right now?
Here’s a tip. Ask yourself frequently throughout the upcoming days, weeks, months, “Which wolf am I feeding right now?”
